Process Safety Management (PSM) Training: Mastering Risk-Based Process Safety

Introduction to PSM Training

Our Process Safety Management (PSM) Training is a comprehensive, risk-based program designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills to manage hazards in high-risk industries. Modeled on the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) Risk-Based Process Safety (RBPS) framework, this course mirrors the structure and rigor of the CCPS Process Safety Boot Camp. It addresses the 20 RBPS elements, providing practical tools to enhance safety, compliance, and operational excellence in process plants like oil and gas, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.

Course Content

The training is structured around the four pillars of the CCPS RBPS framework, ensuring a holistic approach to process safety:

Commit to Process Safety:

  • Process Safety Culture
  • Compliance with Standards
  • Process Safety Competency
  • Workforce Involvement
  • Stakeholder Outreach

Understand Hazards and Risk:

  • Process Knowledge Management
  • Hazard Identification and Risk Analysis (e.g., HAZOP, QRA)

Manage Risk:

  • Operating Procedures
  • Safe Work Practices
  • Asset Integrity and Reliability
  • Contractor Management
  • Training and Performance Assurance
  • Management of Change (MOC)
  • Operational Readiness
  • Conduct of Operations
  • Emergency Management

Learn from Experience:

  • Incident Investigation
  • Measurement and Metrics
  • Auditing
  • Management Review and Continuous Improvement

The content integrates real-world case studies (e.g., Bhopal, Flixborough) to illustrate RBPS applications, drawing from lessons learned in process safety disasters.

Course Outline

This 4-day intensive training (28 hours) is designed to maximize learning through structured modules:

Day 1: Commit to Process Safety (7 hours)

  • Morning: Process Safety Culture, Compliance with Standards
  • Afternoon: Competency, Workforce Involvement, Stakeholder Outreach
  • Activities: Group discussion on safety culture assessment

Day 2: Understand Hazards and Risk (7 hours)

  • Morning: Process Knowledge Management
  • Afternoon: Hazard Identification and Risk Analysis (e.g., HAZOP, QRA)
  • Activities: HAZOP workshop for a two-phase separator

Day 3: Manage Risk (7 hours)

  • Morning: Operating Procedures, Safe Work Practices, Asset Integrity

Ideal for those in oil and gas, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and related sectors seeking to align with CCPS RBPS standards.

Methodology and Mode of Delivery

Our training mirrors the CCPS Process Safety Boot Camp’s engaging and practical approach:

  • Interactive Lectures: Delivered by experienced PSM professionals, covering RBPS theory and applications.
  • Case Studies: Analyze incidents like Bhopal to connect RBPS elements to real-world scenarios.
  • Group Workshops: Hands-on exercises, such as HAZOP for a process unit or MOC scenario planning.
  • Capstone Project: A group analysis of a process safety disaster, applying RBPS elements to propose mitigations.
  • Mock Tests: Comprehensive MCQs to prepare for the final assessment, ensuring understanding of all 20 elements.

Mode of Delivery:

  • In-person (classroom-based for immersive learning)
  • Virtual (live webinars with interactive tools)
  • Hybrid (blended format for flexibility)

Materials: Participant handouts, RBPS framework guides, and case study templates provided in digital and print formats.

Benefits of PSM Training

  • Enhanced Safety: Equip teams to prevent incidents through robust risk management.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Align with OSHA PSM, CCPS RBPS, and OISD standards.
  • Operational Excellence: Improve efficiency by integrating safety into operations.
